And they’re off…Thanks to World Communication Center (WCC), a member of SatCom Group, spectators are able to track the 2010 Iron Dog® snowmobile competition and their favorite team as they brave 1,971 miles of rough Alaskan terrain from Big Lake, to Nome, to Fairbanks.
Each year, racers endure freezing temperatures, near zero visibility, and fatigue throughout “The World’s Longest, Toughest Snowmobile Race”. To ensure safety and to satisfy spectator curiosity, WCC has outfitted each race team with an ASE SBD Pro tracking device which transmits over the Iridium satellite network.
While WCC has sponsored the Iron Dog® race since 2007, this is the second year that viewers are able to follow both the recreational class (started Friday, February 19) and professional class (started Sunday, February 21).
In addition to watching online at www.irondog.org, race officials and fans alike are able to set the time of day for receiving notifications by email and SMS direct to their mobile phones, allowing them to stay easily updated with each teams’ progress.
With growing demand for custom asset tracking technologies, WCC has been working with companies, such as Applied Satellite Engineering to manufacture the equipment and Ontec to provide the web-based interface to monitor the valuable assets over land, air, and sea.
