She Did It! Sixteen year-old Jessica Watson became the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world and coasted into the Sydney Harbour, Australia on Saturday, 15th May 2010 welcomed by enthusiastic crowd of family, friends, and fans.
After approximately 200 days and nearly 23,000 nautical miles, "Australia's newest hero”, as coined by Australia Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, braved a high contrast of elements. Whether at the mercy of perilous wind and seas or unnerving calm waters, Jessica persevered east through the deep Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans.
SatCom Global helped sponsor Jessica with her satellite communications equipment. On board she had Thrane and Thrane SAILOR® 250, powered by the Inmarsat satellite network, enabling her to stay in constant contact to phone, email, and update her website no matter her location on the globe. Now that she is back in her home country, Jessica is pleased to enjoy the creature comforts that land lovers like us take for granted: catching up on movies, indulging in spicy foods, and best of all, sleeping in a bed that doesn’t incessantly rock back and forth.
But that’s not all she is about to enjoy. Not only will she celebrate her 17th birthday in a few days, she gets to enjoy it with her friends and family back on dry land.
This amazing journey has captured the heart of the nation and allowed them to watch one of its finest sailors, inspiring people all over the world. We’re so proud of you Jessica Watson, who left a girl and came back a heroine!
